Sidney: Belleville, Ontario, Canada

We recently got married and being animal lovers, I felt that two cats weren't enough for our household. We needed a dog... or at least I did. It took a lot of convincing to get my husband Rob to say yes to a dog but the minute he did, we were at our local humane society looking for a new companion. We volunteered at the humane society walking dogs on a regular basis, so we had our eye on a few potential dogs. The main one we were going for was a chocolate lab cross. When we went to pick up our dog, we decided to see how this particular dog reacted with cats... and she was a little shy around them which wasn't good. We then tried her with another dog. When we went to get the other dog, Rob noticed a tricolour little soul in a corner kennel... she was unusually quiet compared to the others and had the sadest look in her eyes. She really looked like she was giving up! When we took her out of her kennel and had her confront the chocolate lab, the results were not what we hoped for. Our lab attacked the other dog... we simply could not adopt her after seeing this. It was just too risky. Rob though, seemed quite attached to this other little dog and quite impressed by her. We looked up her info and she had been abandonned and at the shelter for over 4 months. There was no history on her and her breed profile said "Lab Shepherd Cross". We tested her with the cats and she appeared to fear them... which was good. Before we knew it, she was coming home with us.

We thought she was an adult but after a few days out of the shelter we quickly realized that she was but a puppy... with amazing amounts of energy. She was also incredibly loyal... as we had never seen. The lab in her appeared to dominate but she did not act like a lab. She wasn't fond of water and she appeared to "herd" other dogs and even us all the time and was incredibly protective of her toys... hiding them all over the house and yard. Something was fishy.

At the airport one day I started to look at a book of dog breeds in a book store. As I was scanning through Rob stopped me at a page in particular. There right before us was a picture of our Sidney under the name New Zealand Huntaway. We were amazed at our find and quickly began to research on the net and found this website. The huntaway is a unique and amazing dog and deserves to be recognized as a breed of its own. Sidney is very protective of us. She is friendly with strangers and children but always weary of them. She barks at all the right times and alerts us anytime something seems out of the ordinary. She does have one weakness though... black squirrels.

We do spoil our Sidney.... she sleeps on the bed and eats nothing but the highest quality food. She goes on walks twice a day and always looks forward to going to Rob's parent's house where she gets to play with her friend Angus a black lab. (seen in the pictures). We do not use her as a working dog... her only job is to be our companion and she sure does a good job of that. I feel completely safe with her around. We wouldn't trade her for the world. I recommend this dog to anyone!
