Rufus of Sussex

Rufus was born on the 16th of February 1999 in Stratford on Avon.  I went up to Stratford on Avon to collect him after seeing a litter advertised in the Farmers Weekly Online.  I searched for 8 weeks for a Huntaway until I found him.  I told the owner of the litter I wanted a Huntaway as a pet.  She told me she had 3 dogs left and one of them had the biggest paws she had ever seen and he was bigger than the other 2 dogs.  She also said he was the most loving, albeit a bit slower than the others.  She thought he would make an excellent pet.

We went up for the weekend from Sussex and decided it would also be the perfect opportunity to have a weekend away from home.  We saw Rufus on the Friday and collected him on the Sunday.  We brought him down to Sussex and he spent the first night in our bedroom.  After that night we decided he best stay in our shed at the bottom of the garden.  He has lived there ever since.

4 years on and Rufus is big and immensely powerful.  He has an easy life, his role is to guard the house and just be around.  He is very loving and has a fantastic temperament.  When my daughter was 9 she could give him a bone and 10 minutes later take it off him. (I would not encourage this practice unless you know your dog well).  Rufus rarely barks in the garden unless he detects strangers in other gardens.  He does bark while he runs.  He walks without a lead and when I go running with him he stays by my side when running through the sheep.  He comes back when called and does the usual tricks and obeys commands like stay, lie down, leave it, get here, dead, paw, other paw, bed and other tricks.  Looking back, I would say he was easy to train, but I suppose you forget all the anguish when he spots another dog and doesn't come back when asked.

Rufus is now over 4 years old and is a fantastic dog.  He is very loyal, even to the point that if I am in the house, no one can take him out for a walk.  He gets to the end of the street, sits down and barks for me.  The only way to move him is to drag him (if you can).  He has been a pleasure for me since I have owned him and no doubt will continue to be a pleasure for many, many years.
